News from the private education initiatives in Datuchi/Bagrot Valley
Monika Girls High SchoolSincere thanks to all friends of the girls school in Datuchi/ Bagrot Valley which has been growing steadily over the years. Today 235 girls visit the school, which started on a private base in 1992 with 20 students. 1.-8. classes are run in the morning. Students of 9. and 10. class study in the afternoon since classrooms are missing.
"We beam with joy"a lady teacher told my happily, when we talked about the new school building. In May, the girls moved to their own schoolground after having been hosted in the afternoon at the boys school for many years. The newly founded Government Middle School for Girls consists of two buildings with 4 classrooms each, staff room and office, and a small toilet building. The students had planted some flowers on the schoolground already. And one teacher complained with a smile that nowadays many girls reluctantly leave the school after the last period. Also the lady teachers seem relaxed and cheerful since staying on their own schoolground.
Still to be doneThe number of teachers has been increased from nine (2003) to thirteen. This is to ensure that a sufficient number of teachers is present daily to separately instruct each class. Ten teachers are to be funded privately despite the registration of our private initiative as a government middle school. This amounts to monthly costs of EUR 175.- (12.000 PKR). And by now, it is high time to arrange for 11. and 12. class tutorials. Successful and ambitious graduates of our private high school shall be offered an opportunity to regularly study in a protected space outside their home instructed by two qualified teachers. Annual exams can be given at an intermediate college located outside Bagrot. Beside funding for personnel expenditure, heating furnaces and floor mats are urgently needed in each classroom. And some benches and tables, because classroom furniture will be provided by the school administrative board some time next year at the earliest. The chairs and benches which had been provided privately some years ago have remained in the Government High School for Boys as an acknowledgment for hosting the girls students on its premises over many years.
Life-long learningSince beginning of this year, teachers of the schools in Datuchi participate in a professional training program. New teaching methods which promote creativity and experimental learning are introduced. In workshops and joined lessons with a trainer, teachers practice new methods of class instruction. Relying on local no or low-cost materials, new learning tools are developped. It was a great pleasure to watch the teachers engaging in lively discussions and practising interactive and experimental learning in the classroom.
BASE Public SchoolLast but not least, encouraging news shall be reported from the latest community-based education initiative, a public school founded by ambitious parents and teachers and practising co-education. An impressing number of 140 male and 66 female students are taught in tent classrooms on the school's own premises in Datuchi. In September, the construction of a school building has been started, supported by the Aga Khan Education Service (AKES). To complete the building, the community-based Bagrot Association for Social Enhancement will have to purchase an additional plot of land of 1.500 - 2.000 sqm adjacent to the school's premises. The price for 500 sqm amounts to EUR 1.170.- (80.000 PKR), a financial burden hardly to be managed by the local self-help organization. For pictures please go to Fotos or to 15. Anniversary
